John Whittingdale, the former culture secretary, says Bercow's speech was "damaging to the national interest". Mr Whittingdale told Sky News: "It was a performance, it was John Bercow playing to the gallery and I think it was damaging to the national interest. He said Mr Bercow's actions had "undoubtedly caused deep embarrassment". He accused Mr Bercow of "playing to the gallery for as much publicity as possible" and suggested the Speaker could have had a "quiet word" with the Prime Minister rather than speaking publicly. I think it is regrettable that he did it."
