Trump Adviser Asked FBI to Dispute Russia Reports quoting : "USA TODAY"

Senior Trump officials said they didn't do anything wrong because they never discussed the investigation, only news reports about it. FBI officials said they didn't want to get into the business of publicly parsing elements of news reports. The administration officials said Priebus asked if he could say that the story had been knocked down by top intelligence officials. White House officials dispute that Priebus did anything wrong, and a senior law enforcement officials said FBI officials also did not consider any lines to have been crossed. Senate and House intelligence committees also are investigating.

In disputing the CNN story, White House officials said an FBI official approached Priebus during a meeting to deny a New York Times story about Trump associates and Russia. "It was a discussion about a story in a newspaper," said White House spokesman Sean Spicer. The request came from White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who has publicly said that FBI officials told him the stories were overblown. Priebus asked the FBI official whether the bureau would say that publicly; the FBI official said the bureau didn't want to get in a position in which it would have to comment on every story about a pending investigation.
