"Chicago Tribune" : Donald Trump's populism is a charade

On infrastructure, taxes and health care, then, Trump's "populism" runs headlong into extreme-right-wing policy ideas that do not do much for working-class voters. Then there is the tax plan, which Edward Luce points out looks more like a stick-it-to-the-middle-class plan:"Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary, wants them enacted by August. Trade deficit point doesn't factor in servicesTrump pointed to the U.S. trade deficit as an example of the "mess" he inherited from Obama. Many people purchasing health care through federal and state insurance marketplaces did see double-digit premium increases, but Trump's talking point doesn't accurately reflect the situation overall. Most people get their health care through the employer, which hasn't seen the same premium spikes. And for people on the health care exchanges, federal subsidies are offsetting premium increases for many. Several states did not see such dramatic premium changes, and experts say that health care costs broadly are increasing at a lower rate than before the health care law took effect.

Stephen Colbert Rips Apart Donald Trump's First Major Speech To Congress
President Donald Trump's first major address to Congress on Tuesday night did not leave Stephen Colbert feeling inspired. "Because I think in this timeline, the Confederacy won."Citing Trump's vow to cut government waste and eliminate "non-essential federal workers," Colbert questioned whether that meant adviser Kellyanne Conway would soon be out of a job. Colbert also had something to say about Trump's plea to ignore "trivial fights," his vow to prioritize immigrants who can "support themselves" and his promise to "support the victims of crime." The speech's central theme may have been the "renewal of the American spirit," but the "Late Show" host said it sounded more like a bootleg version of "Make America Great Again.""Now, technically, this was not a 'State of the Union,'" Colbert said during a live taping of his show.
