Donald Trump threatens to 'change tax law' to penalise NFL over 'take a knee' protests

open_word} Donald Trump has criticised NFL clubs for "disrespecting" their country with protests during the national anthem, suggesting they receive "massive tax breaks" and calling for a change to the law to have these removed. A number of NFL players have kneeled during the national anthem as a form of peaceful protest in the past few weeks. Why is the NFL getting massive tax breaks while at the same time disrespecting our Anthem, Flag and Country? The comments caused dozens more NFL players to begin kneeling before games and prompted the league's commissioner, Roger Goodell, to criticise Mr Trump's "divisive" outbursts. A Republican congressman last month called for changes to tax law in response to NFL players' protests.

On Tuesday, the commissioner sent a memo to league owners that vaguely outlined a plan that would give Trump exactly what he was asking for. Currently the NFL operations manual states that players "should stand at attention" during the anthem. This move would offer teams license to "fire" any "son of a bitch" who doesn't stand, lest owners face severe NFL-mandated consequences. His weasel-worded memo to league owners did not expressly declare what was under consideration. "Like many of our fans, we believe that everyone should stand for the National Anthem," Goodell wrote.

as declared in As the controversy over protests during the national anthem grew, President Donald Trump denounced NFL owners as being "afraid of the players," a state of affairs that he called "disgraceful". That refusal continued this week, as Trump spoke directly to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, reminding him of NFL rules he said applied to players around the anthem. When Trump sparked the national debate, he did so by going right over the heads of the players. "Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. — Donald J.
